Myths and legends in Ariège

Caves, lakes, fairies, mysteries… but also the history that has marked the Central Pyrenees.

Do you know the legend of the Devil’s Bridge at Montoulieu?

It is said that it was built by the devil to allow the inhabitants of the area, surrounded by mountains and forests full of threatening creatures, to cross the Ariège river. As retribution, the devil would claim the soul of the first person who crossed the threshold of the
the bridge. He didn’t foresee the ingenuity of one of the inhabitants of the village, who made a cat cross first!

The Ariège is an attractive region located on the borders of the great South-West of France, a land of wide open spaces with a fascinating history. For centuries, its mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, as well as its fauna and flora have provided the backdrop for the tales and legends filled with mystery that the locals love.
