Following the Canal du Midi,
from the Seuil de Naurouze to Béziers, by road.
Do you know that the very concept of the Canal du Midi dates back to the Roman era?
Already at the time of the Emperor Nero, there was a vision to build a “canal of the two seas” to facilitate commercial and human exchanges and better control the Occitan province. The financial and technical scope of the work made this project impossible.
It was in the 17th century, under the impetus of the entrepreneur Pierre-Paul Riquet, that the Canal du Midi began to take shape. More than 12,000 people took part in the project, and the canal was completed in 1681 after fourteen years of hard work.
A masterpiece of technical and human ingenuity, the Canal du Midi is about 240 km long and is the oldest canal in Europe still in operation. It has some 350 engineering structures (including 126 bridges and 55 aqueducts) and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Along the way, you will discover some of its splendours.
