Visits along the Garonne River

from the gates of Bordeaux to the Spanish Val d’Aran.

What is the main river in south-west France?

It is of course the Garonne. With a length of 647 km, its source is located in Spain and it crosses a large part
of Occitania to flow into the Atlantic Ocean.

But much more than a river, “Dame Garonne” is one of the symbols of Occitan heritage. From time immemorial, it has accompanied the populations in various areas of local life: trade, industry, fishing, transport of goods, leisure activities… Humans have had to use their abilities to tame this waterway, to preserve it and above all, to get to know it.

This itinerary will take you along the Garonne River, near the Spanish source, to the place near where it flows into the ocean.

You will discover the important role of the river over the centuries and its remarkable natural heritage. What better way to understand the Occitan region in order to enhance it and protect its wonders…
